Harnett County EMS Paramedic Part-time Job Opportunity
Position: Paramedic
Salary: $19.60/hour Job Type: Part-Time Department: Emergency Services Closing Date: Continuous POSITION SUMMARY: Harnett County's Emergency Medical Services Department is currently seeking an eager, responsible and reliable Paramedic to perform professional advanced life support work when operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and performing advanced emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while en route to hospital. Harnett County is nestled in the heart of North Carolina between Raleigh and Fayetteville, covering 641 square miles and taking care of over 130,000 citizens. Harnett County prides itself on having innovative protocols, providing excellent patient care, and being integrated with today's best practices. Innovative cardiac monitoring is provided to the community with the use of the latest Zoll X Series monitors. The County has 16 Paramedic level ambulances based around the county, 3 BLS transporting units and a wheelchair van each shift that responded to just over 25,000 calls last year. The units are supplied with the power load system from Stryker to prevent injuries to the providers. The County also has a Tactical Medic team that responds with the Harnett County Sheriff's Department during classified situations. Harnett County provides a free health clinic for employees and anyone in their household. Continuing education is provided to all staff on a monthly basis. The County pays the annual dues for all part-time and full-time employees to be a member of the North Carolina Association of Rescue and EMS. Harnett County maintains an excellent partnership with Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine in which providers attend regular simulation training and use the anatomy (cadaver) lab for real life experience. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Serves as Paramedic in charge on calls, directing care and response and overseeing work of assigned Emergency Medical Technician or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician's; supervises students assigned to ride. • Responds to emergency calls in an ambulance or quick response vehicle and performs necessary medical care and rescue work in accordance with established protocols for advanced life support; administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of a variety of specialized equipment. • Performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols established by the department and the County's Medical Director; administers cardiac and narcotic medications via intravenous line, administers specified solutions by intravenous infusion, performs pulmonary ventilations and obtains EKG's for cardiac diagnostics. • Performs patient assessment and life support techniques in accordance with the approved protocols. • Transports patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintaining contact with medical staff while in transport and assuring care of patient; oversees treatment and care for long-term care patients on transport to other facilities, hospitals or doctor's offices. • Completes full patient care documentation through various paper and electronic based formats during and after calls for service including information for billing documentation, and legal accountability. • Participates in a continuous training program to maintain certification and improve competence in medical technical work and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay. • Inspects and tests response vehicles and their emergency equipment, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention. • Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities; cleans, sweeps, mops, etc. • Provides assistance to members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations, as requested. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Considerable knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques. • Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims. • Considerable knowledge of county geography and locations of roads and streets. • Skill in recognizing trauma and signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to determine appropriate treatment. • Ability to work with a diverse socioeconomic population based on the unique situations encountered. • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations. • Ability to safely drive an emergency medical vehicle in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicle laws. • Ability to communicate effectively in a tactful and firm manner with the public. • Ability to accurately record services provided on required forms. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-employees and those contacted in the course of work. • Ability to maintain vehicles, equipment, and facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: High School or General Education Development Diploma (GED) and some experience in emergency medical service work as a Paramedic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Licensing and Certifications: Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License; Certification by the State of North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as a Paramedic. Preferred Certifications: Basic Life Support certification (BLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification(PALS); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification (ACLS); International Trauma Life Support certification (ITLS); Prehospital Trauma Life Support certification (PHTLS); Emergency Vehicle Driver certification (EVD); National Incident Management System certification (NIMS); HAZMAT certification. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Successful completion of a drug screening and criminal background check will be required as a condition of employment.
